Pig Tales Activity Booklet

Bring Agriculture to Life in Your Classroom

Alberta Pork believes agriculture literacy starts early. When students understand where their food comes from, they gain a deeper appreciation for farmers, animal care, and the role agriculture plays in our communities.

That’s why we’re proud to partner with Manitoba Pork and Sask Pork to offer Pig Tales — an engaging activity booklet designed for Grades 3–6 classrooms.

This interactive resource takes students on a virtual tour of a hog farm, guiding them through every stage of production — from gestation and farrowing barns to nursery and feeder barns, and finally transportation to market. Along the way, students learn how farmers care for pigs at every stage of life.

The booklet reinforces key concepts including:

  • Biosecurity practices that keep pigs healthy (Healthy Farms = Healthy Pigs)
  • How sows are cared for during pregnancy (3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days)
  • The role of veterinarians and daily animal care
  • Technology used in modern barns, including ultrasound, electronic sow feeders, software systems, and geothermal heat pumps
  • Pig nutrition and how feed rations change as pigs grow

Students can enjoy puzzles, connect-the-dots activities, “I Spy” games, enrichment spot-the-difference pages, and nutrition matching exercises — all while learning how Alberta hog producers prioritize animal care, sustainability, innovation, and food safety.

The booklet also highlights how pigs are transported safely by trained drivers and how pork is a nutritious, versatile protein Canadians enjoy every day.

Supporting Alberta’s Curriculum

Pig Tales supports learning outcomes in:

  • Agriculture literacy
  • Food systems
  • Animal care and welfare
  • Science and technology
  • Nutrition education

It’s a practical, classroom-ready way to help students connect farm to fork.
