High School Culinary Challenge Sponsorship
Alberta Pork is proud to announce a five-year partnership as the Presenting Sponsor of the High School Culinary Challenge (HSCC) from 2024 to 2029. Our long-standing support of this initiative reflects our deep commitment to investing in the future of Alberta’s culinary talent and local food culture.
The High School Culinary Challenge is a dynamic career exploration event that introduces high school students to the world of professional cooking. Hosted in the state-of-the-art NAIT culinary kitchens, the competition immerses students in the high-energy environment of team-based cooking, sharpening their skills and igniting their passion for culinary arts. Since its inception, more than 600 students have participated—many of whom have gone on to successful careers, even opening their own restaurants in our vibrant local food scene.
On March 8, 2025, sixteen teams—each consisting of three students and one coach—from twelve Edmonton-area high schools competed in a fast-paced, three-course pork-themed challenge. Judged on timing, sanitation, presentation, preparation, and taste, the event not only highlighted technical skills but also the creative potential of each young chef.
“From seeing the past 17 years of High School Culinary Challenges, we are all appreciative of the momentum the event gives to our competitors in their career pathways, as well as to our high school courses and to our city’s vibrant food scene,” said Andrew Hess, HSCC Chair. “The Challenge also supports apprenticeship training – which is immensely valuable and one of the most equitable education opportunities available.”
The excitement continued at the 18th Annual HSCC Awards Ceremony on March 17, 2025, beginning with a reception at Ernest’s featuring appetizers crafted by the student teams. The culinary team from St. Joseph Catholic High School captured the Gold Medal, with Dr. Anne Anderson High School earning Silver, and Bev Facey High School taking home Bronze.
Four talented students were also awarded scholarships:
- Kestra Daum (Paul Kane High School) – Stanley Townsend Scholarship
- Jaden Blakis (St. Joseph Catholic High School) – Simon Smotkowicz Scholarship
- Keagan Upstone (St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School) – Jan Anderson Scholarship
- Polina Borysiuk (St. Oscar Romero Catholic High School) – HSCC Scholarship
