WHO WE ARE

Alberta Pork is the voice and champion of the province’s pork producers

Proudly Rooted in Alberta

For more than 50 years, Alberta Pork has been the voice and champion of the province’s pork producers. What began in 1969 as a marketing board for Alberta hogs has grown into a modern, dynamic organization representing local producers, promoting high-quality pork, and ensuring the sustainability of Alberta’s pork industry.

Guided by our long-term vision,
Alberta Pork works to ensure:

Pigs are raised humanely and safely, with world-class care.

Our producers, partners, and consumers—are informed and supported.

Planet is respected, with a commitment to sustainable agriculture.

Progress drives our decisions, from trade policy to traceability.

The story of Alberta Pork

Our Origins

In 1969, the Alberta Hog Producers Marketing Board was established to market all hogs in the province. Backed by farmers from across Alberta, early leadership focused on building fair, efficient systems and expanding market access.

By 1971, seven producer districts were formed—stretching from Hill Spring to Grimshaw—and Alberta was already forming strong international ties, including a key relationship with Japan that remains vital today.

Our Origins

Facing Challenges, Driving Change

The 1970s and ’80s brought both growth and pressure. Labour disputes, trade barriers, and volatile markets tested the resilience of producers and the organization. But Alberta Pork adapted—defending fair pricing, supporting innovation, and taking on an active role in trade policy, always with the goal of protecting the livelihoods of Alberta’s hog producers.

Facing Challenges, Driving Change

From Marketer to Advocate

By 1996, the industry shifted from single-desk marketing to an open marketplace. Alberta Pork evolved, focusing on advocacy, food safety, animal welfare, and consumer education. Memorable campaigns like “Put Pork on Your Fork” helped connect Alberta producers to Canadians’ dinner tables.

Innovation & Integrity

Partnerships with universities and government supported cutting-edge research. We launched the Pig Science Centre, embraced traceability with digital E-manifests, implemented the Canadian Pork Excellence (PigSAFE, PigCARE, PigTRACE) program with 3rd party auditing, and provided critical leadership during the COVID-19 crisis. Throughout we have stood for industry transparency, science-based solutions, and look for continuous improvements.
